When I have to travel, I usually scour the local media along the locations for possible deals. It is fairly easy if you look up the zip code and city names and then search by common search terms such as deals/vacation/zip code/cities as well as leading hotel names.
Speaking of hotels, one particular chain which I have often felt comfortable about is is Marriott. Not only are the properties well diversified and abundantly available across various cities, there is almost good deals running with Amex credit cards or Chase credit cards which give you additional discounts.

There are a lot of great credit cards with Citi or Barclays which might qualify you for a free night at these hotels. Chase Marriott gives one night free if you are approved for their credit card, which has no annual fee for the first year, and gives you additional 80,000 points.
